NetBSD/alpha 1.2
NetBSD/alpha 1.2 is the first formal release of
NetBSD/alpha. The
NetBSD/alpha 1.2 release is really just a snapshot of NetBSD/alpha
built with the NetBSD 1.2 sources, but it can be used as a stable
platform for users who wish to run NetBSD/alpha but cannot follow
NetBSD-current.
Chris Demetriou was the maintainer of NetBSD/alpha at the time of the
1.2 release.
If you're interested in installing NetBSD/alpha you should use a
more recent version, though
the 1.2
installation notes (albeit sparse and, in places, incorrect) are
still available.
Supported Systems and Hardware
NetBSD/alpha 1.2 supports the following system types:
- DEC 3000/500 family systems (3000/[4-9]00)
- DEC 3000/300 family systems
- Digital AlphaStation 200, 250, 255, and 400 systems
- Digital AlphaStation 500 and 600 systems
- Digital AXPpci systems (including UDB and Multia)
Systems not listed may work, but unless they are very similar to
listed systems they probably will not.
Supported hardware lists for the various system bus types
(TurboChannel, PCI,
EISA, and ISA) are below.
With each entry, driver names are included in italics where
appropriate.
Hardware not listed above will probably not work unless it behaves
identically to hardware which will.
Turbochannel systems must be used with serial consoles, since
graphics consoles (frame buffers, keyboards, and mice) are not supported.
For the systems with a TurboChannel bus (DEC 3000/500 family and
DEC 3000/300 family systems), the following hardware is supported:
- Built-in AMD 7990 (LANCE) ethernet interface (le)
- The channels on the Z8530 serial ports which provide general-purpose
serial ports (scc)
- Built-in NCR 53C94 and 53CF94-2 SCSI adapters (esp)
- DEC DEFTA FDDI option boards (fta)
The following hardware may work, but has not been tested:
- DEC PMAD-AA AMD 7990 (LANCE) ethernet option boards (le)
The following hardware will not work:
- Frame buffers
- Keyboards
- Mouse
PCI/EISA/ISA System Hardware Support
AlphaStation and AXPpci systems include support (depending on model)
for PCI, EISA, and ISA devices.
The following PCI hardware is supported:
- VGA-compatible video (pcivga)
- DECchip 21030-based video (ZLXp-E1, ZLXp-E2, and ZLXp-E3 boards,
tga)
- DECchip 21x40-family Ethernet (10Mbps and 10/100Mbps, de)
- DEC DEFPA FDDI (fpa)
- NCR/Symbios 53c8xx-family SCSI (ncr)
- PCI-PCI bridges (ppb, tested with the DECchip 21050, but
should work with all bridges that comply with the PCI-PCI
bridge specification)
The following PCI hardware may work, but has not been tested:
- 3COM 3c59x Ethernet (10Mbps and 10/100Mbps, ep)
- PCI LANCE Ethernet (le)
- Efficient Networks ENI-155p ATM (en)
The following PCI hardware will not work:
- Qlogic ISP-1020 SCSI adapters (AlphaStation 500 and 600 systems
must be booted diskless)
The following EISA hardware is supported:
The following ISA hardware is supported:
- PS/2 style keyboard and mouse (pckbd and pms)
- NS16450 and NS16550 UARTs (com)
The following ISA hardware may work, but has not been tested:
- PC-style parallel ports (lpt)
- Multi-port 16x50 boards (such as ast)
The following ISA hardware will not work:
- WSS-compatible sound hardware, e.g. the sound hardware in AlphaStation
systems.
If you're interested in NetBSD/alpha you should use a
more recent version.
